WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN THE 3M DECATUR Water Contamination Lawsuit ?

In rural Northwest Alabama, four residents have launched a class action against 3M Company. They filed a 3M Decatur water contamination lawsuit, claiming that the chemicals from its 3M Decatur manufacturing plant have been found at dangerous levels in local drinking water.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 3M DECATUR PLANT

  • The 3M Decatur plant is located about 30 miles west of Huntsville, AL. In addition, it is 40 miles from the Tennessee state line.
  • The facility has been operating in Decatur, AL since 1961.
  • The 3M Decatur plant manufactures products that can be divided into two major areas: specialty resins and specialty films. The specialty resins are used in the film manufacturing processes to produce the specialty films.

Issues regarding Decatur water contamination

PFAS is the common name for per and polyfluoroalkyl substances, a series of man-made chemicals sometimes called forever chemicals. They have been used for decades in many commercial products for creating stain-resistant coatings on fabrics, such as Scotchgard or non-stick cookware, among other uses. PFAS are not found in nature.
Unfortunately, these chemicals have also been linked to health problems, including cancer. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a health advisory in 2016 warning that lifetime exposure to these chemicals through drinking water could be harmful, even at concentrations as low as 70 parts per trillion. If you have a reason to believe that you were affected by water contamination, we recommend speaking with the best attorney for 3M Decatur water contamination immediately to get maximum compensation for your claims.
In October 2021, 3M reached a consent agreement with the state of Alabama regarding PFAS pollution from its Decatur facility. Consequently, it pledges to pay for the costs of PFAS cleanup without limit. The company says it has already spent $100 million to address the PFAS pollution from the Decatur plant.
When the 3M Decatur water contamination lawsuit was filed, Decatur water works said that it was seeking to compel 3M to pay for a new filter system so they can address those chemicals that are not removed by the standard water treatment processes.
In 2019, a 3M Decatur water contamination settlement was reached with another utility, the West Morgan East Lawrence Water and Sewer Authority. In this case, they agreed to pay $35 million for a new filter system for that utility that draws from the Tennessee River downstream from 3M’s Decatur facility.

3M Decatur water contamination lawsuit updates

3M has reached a collaborative agreement to resolve ongoing litigation and negotiations related to PFAS near 3M’s Decatur facility with parties including The City of Decatur and Morgan County, the plaintiffs in St. John, and the Tennessee Riverkeeper organization.
Through these agreements, subject to final approval, 3M will support activities to address PFAS that 3M manufactured or disposed of, as well as to enhance the quality of life for Decatur residents.
It has been found that low levels of exposure to PFAS-type chemicals can cause immunotoxicity, cancer, high cholesterol, thyroid disease, and ulcerative colitis. In addition, they have been detected in umbilical cord blood.
Exposure to PFAS chemicals has caused the Decatur residents to suffer irritation of the eyes, mouth, nose, and throat. It has also led to skin rash and burning of the skin. Some people have developed asthma, while others have been diagnosed with cancer.
